Antigone Paper

Antigone is guilty for performing the burial rights on her brother Polyneices. King Creon made it a law that no one was to touch Polyneices body. “If we defy the law and move against the king’s decree” (Sophocles 60-61). Also Polyneices was fighting against the city when he was at battle with Antigone’s other brother, Eteocles. There should be no question about this situation; Antigone is guilty for going and burying her brother. “Spreading thirsty dust onto the flesh and undertaking all appropriate rites.”(Sophocles 264-265). Although Antigone did not bury Polyneices underground she did bury him just enough though so that his spirits won’t haunt the area around him.
When the King declares a new law it should be followed just like all the other laws. Antigone had gone and performed a sacred ritual for a person who wanted to take control over Thebes, even if it meant killing his own brother. What kind of a man deserves to be given his burial rights after he has killed his brother? Antigone should be ashamed of herself, for she has disgraced her family even more than it needs to be. Antigone was even aware of the new law set forth by Creon. Antigone was even told right before she went to perform the burial on her brother Polyneices. Antigone was told by Ismene, Antigone’s sister, who Antigone had asked to come with. Ismene was loyal to the king though and did not go and break the law. Antigone should be exiled from Thebes as her punishment.

"Found shock of death in the dusty joy of battle"(Sophocles 31-32). Eteocles and Polyneices are both shockingly dead. The two siblings killed each other in battle. This shows the theme of surprise, because when Antigone gave Polyneices a proper burial, this action of hers surprised Creon and Ismene because it was against the law and she was a women. The image shows the element of surprise in battle. This is important because it shows how Antigone risked her life for her brother, which was surprising to see from a women.
A fatal flaw in "Antigone" was how Creon was stuck up. Creon being stuck up is what caused him to lose his son and his wife. "Is it a mistake to honour my own rule?"(Sophocles 848). THis shows Creons stubbornness of not caring about looking at and understanding what Antigone did, Creon is enforcing his rule no matter what. This is what lead to the death of haemon and Creons wife. "I killed you. my son, without intending to, and you, as well, my wife.....I don't know where to look or find support. Everything I touch goes wrong..."(Sophocles 1486-1489). At the end Creon fell apart.
Anagnorisis is seen at the end of "Antigone". "Alas, it seems you've learned to see whats right-- but far too late"(Sophocles 1269-1270). This is said to Creon when he finally realized that he had been a fool. Thus resulting with the death of Haemon, Creons wife, and Antigone. Which is where peripeteia occurs. Creon now knows that what he has done, is the reason his close family killed themselves. "I murdered you.... I speak the truth... for now what I am in life is nothing"(Sophocles 1319-1322). This shows how Creon admitted he was wrong , and the consequences were his fault. Catharsis is at the very end of the play , when the chorus says "The most important part of true success is wisdom..."(Sophocles 1348-1349). This gives a good closure, and release from all that has occured in the play.
In "Antigone" it is shown that men are dominant over women. Women are not valued as high as men in the ancient greek society. "We must remember that by birth we're women, and, as such, we shouldn't fight with men"(Sophocles 62-63). This shows that the women should let men handle things, and women just stay out of it.

Letter to Antigone

Dear Antigone,

Antigone you are a couragous woman. To go agaisnt our Uncle, and King is just crazy, especially if its just to give our brother a proper burial. Antigone you respect Polyneices rights even though Polyneices did go against our city in battle. Never the less he is our brother, and I should have seen that instead of my fear of death. I am a coward and I did not want to risk the chance of getting caught and being sentenced to death by our king. It is a shame that both of our brothers are dead though just to be king. I hope you do not get caught by the authorities, or anyone who is loyal to the king. I say that because you are doing a noble thing and it deserves to be noticed but you should not be punished for it. If you are caught I will come forward and admit to being apart of this because you should not have done this on your own. Together we will honor our brother, even if you are mad at me I will still stand strong next to you when you are brought before the king, if you are caught that is.

I am ashamed that I told you I would not go with you for fear of getting caught. Polyneices was, and still is, our brother, and no matter what he did he should still be given that proper burial that he deserved. Antigone you are a much better sister than I. I wish you luck on your journey to do the right thing for Polyneices.

Your dearest sister,

Ismene

Thoughts on Technology

I know how to get around on a computer with the internet, uploading photos, and downloading music. I do not do a whole lot on the computer. When something goes wrong with my computer I have to have my dad fix it or take it to a computer expert. I do not know a whole lot about technology. If someone shows me how to do something on the computer then I can do it but other words I have no idea how to fix problems that arise on my computer. I like playing games on the computer and surfing the internet. I also like working with my pictures on the computer and uploading music on itunes.
