Pictures of the Tiger Cruise!

A Week on the U.S.S Bonhomme Richard

When I was 9 or 10 I went on a tiger cruise. A tiger cruise is for the family of the sailor or marine who just spent a long period of time on the ship. My Dad was a Marine and he had been deployed on the U.S.S Bonhomme Richard since about October. He was originally going to leave after Christmas, but then 9/11 happened so his departure date got bumped up. My Dad travelled around the world and then after 6 months he was at the navy base in Hawaii, most of you know it as the place where Pearl Harbor occurred. My mom, brother and I went to meet him in Hawaii. My mom could not go on the tiger cruise because of she was his wife, and girlfriends boyfriends, and husbands were not allowed to come on the cruise because the ship didn't want that kind of relation ship on board.
Sleeping on a navy ship is not like sleeping on a cruise ship. On the ship there are 4 beds stacked on top of the other and there is less than 12 inches of head room when you are lying down. The men and women sleep separately from each other. I slept on the bottom bunk for the week. There was less chance of falling out of the bed from the movement of the ship since I slept on the bottom. Breakfast was served at 7 in the morning so I never actually had breakfast, not that I really wanted it. The food on the ship was absolutely terrible. I remember eating a lot of bread rolls, because that was the only thing that was appealing to eat.
On the ship there were a lot of demonstrations done for the tigers to see and if the tiger was old enough the tiger could actually shoot some of the guns. Tiger is what the crew on the ship called the kids that were on board. One place that I remember going to is down below the deck where the anchor is for the ship. I learned how to tie different knots, and the names of different pieces of equipment down there. There were a lot of helicopter demonstrations, including rescuing a dummy from the pacific ocean. The ship I was on was a helicopter carrier, so there were alot of helicopters. On one of the nights the tigers got to go up on deck and use the night vision goggles to see what it was like up there. It was dark, obviously, and the night vision goggles were kind of big, especially to a kid. One of the demonstrations was of specialy trained marines controlling a riot. That was pretty cool to watch, they came in with all their gear on, and they marched in unison, so there was a loud stomping noise every time they took a step it was very intimidating. Following that demonstration there were trained martial arts marines giving a demonstration. I remember one guy, he was very tall, he just stood straight and then fell down onto the ground, as straight as a stick. It was amazing! On one of the days I saw a sniper with all of his gear on, he looked like a monster from the swamp or something. Another one of the tours I got to go on was of the aircraft control room. The room was dark, and the lights from the computer were glowing red and green. Everyday there was a trivia question asked, but if you didnt get to the phone fast enough there was no way you could win. The last night I was on the ship I was up till about 2 in the morning.

On the day we were to go back ashore everyone had to wait for the ride to be ready in the hangar bay. Since I had been up till 2 in the morning I was really tired. There were helicopters and LDS's leaving constantly. But I was tired so I laid down on the sea bags and fell asleep. Some of my dads friends were really shocked that I could fall asleep with all of the noise. They were shocked because they had just spent 6 months on the ship and could never fall asleep with all of that noise around them. After having slept for a little while it was time to leave so we boarded the LDS. My mom was waiting to pick us up at thespot where we got dropped off. Overall the trip was possibly a once in a life time adventure for me. For my brother it was his second tiger cruise, and he will probably be going on more because he is on a path to become a United States Marine.

LRJ 1 Beowulf

A value of the society in Beowulf is their religion. "But blessed is he who after death can approach the Lord and find friendship in the father's embrace."(Heaney 186-188). They value their relationship with the lord. The quote shows how even though the lord did not come to their aid when they needed it, they still believed in the lord; and the person that still believes in the lord will go to heaven. In the text there are references to god and also references to stories from the bible.
In Beowulf there are many alliterations. One alliteration is "There was Shield Sheafson, scourge of many tribes,"(Heaney 4). The alliteration in this story adds to the effect because it makes it stand out more than the other lines in the story. The repetition of the consonant is what makes it stick out more, and it also makes it seem more important to that scene that it occurs in. "The Spear-Danes in days gone by"(Heaney 1). This alliteration adds emphasis to how many days had come and gone. The alliteration there sort of dramatizes the words and makes the beginning of the story more interesting.
Another literary device in Beowulf is the use of kenning's. An example would be " He set the sun and moon to be earth's lamplight,"(Heaney 94-95). The kenning would be "earth's lamplight", because instead of just using plain language and saying something along the lines of a light for those on earth to see the author made it much more interesting by saying that the sun and moon are "earth's lamplight". Another kenning in Beowulf is "but the throne itself, the treasure-seat,"(Heaney 168). This is yet another example of a kenning because the author is saying how great being on the throne is and kind of what comes with the throne, treasure. "treasure-seat" is just another more interesting and better way to say the throne. These kennings add to the effect of Beowulf because by using kennings it makes the story seem more interesting, and it also puts a better picture into the mind of the reader.

Antigone Paper

Antigone is guilty for performing the burial rights on her brother Polyneices. King Creon made it a law that no one was to touch Polyneices body. “If we defy the law and move against the king’s decree” (Sophocles 60-61). Also Polyneices was fighting against the city when he was at battle with Antigone’s other brother, Eteocles. There should be no question about this situation; Antigone is guilty for going and burying her brother. “Spreading thirsty dust onto the flesh and undertaking all appropriate rites.”(Sophocles 264-265). Although Antigone did not bury Polyneices underground she did bury him just enough though so that his spirits won’t haunt the area around him.
When the King declares a new law it should be followed just like all the other laws. Antigone had gone and performed a sacred ritual for a person who wanted to take control over Thebes, even if it meant killing his own brother. What kind of a man deserves to be given his burial rights after he has killed his brother? Antigone should be ashamed of herself, for she has disgraced her family even more than it needs to be. Antigone was even aware of the new law set forth by Creon. Antigone was even told right before she went to perform the burial on her brother Polyneices. Antigone was told by Ismene, Antigone’s sister, who Antigone had asked to come with. Ismene was loyal to the king though and did not go and break the law. Antigone should be exiled from Thebes as her punishment.

"Found shock of death in the dusty joy of battle"(Sophocles 31-32). Eteocles and Polyneices are both shockingly dead. The two siblings killed each other in battle. This shows the theme of surprise, because when Antigone gave Polyneices a proper burial, this action of hers surprised Creon and Ismene because it was against the law and she was a women. The image shows the element of surprise in battle. This is important because it shows how Antigone risked her life for her brother, which was surprising to see from a women.
A fatal flaw in "Antigone" was how Creon was stuck up. Creon being stuck up is what caused him to lose his son and his wife. "Is it a mistake to honour my own rule?"(Sophocles 848). THis shows Creons stubbornness of not caring about looking at and understanding what Antigone did, Creon is enforcing his rule no matter what. This is what lead to the death of haemon and Creons wife. "I killed you. my son, without intending to, and you, as well, my wife.....I don't know where to look or find support. Everything I touch goes wrong..."(Sophocles 1486-1489). At the end Creon fell apart.
Anagnorisis is seen at the end of "Antigone". "Alas, it seems you've learned to see whats right-- but far too late"(Sophocles 1269-1270). This is said to Creon when he finally realized that he had been a fool. Thus resulting with the death of Haemon, Creons wife, and Antigone. Which is where peripeteia occurs. Creon now knows that what he has done, is the reason his close family killed themselves. "I murdered you.... I speak the truth... for now what I am in life is nothing"(Sophocles 1319-1322). This shows how Creon admitted he was wrong , and the consequences were his fault. Catharsis is at the very end of the play , when the chorus says "The most important part of true success is wisdom..."(Sophocles 1348-1349). This gives a good closure, and release from all that has occured in the play.
In "Antigone" it is shown that men are dominant over women. Women are not valued as high as men in the ancient greek society. "We must remember that by birth we're women, and, as such, we shouldn't fight with men"(Sophocles 62-63). This shows that the women should let men handle things, and women just stay out of it.

Letter to Antigone

Dear Antigone,

Antigone you are a couragous woman. To go agaisnt our Uncle, and King is just crazy, especially if its just to give our brother a proper burial. Antigone you respect Polyneices rights even though Polyneices did go against our city in battle. Never the less he is our brother, and I should have seen that instead of my fear of death. I am a coward and I did not want to risk the chance of getting caught and being sentenced to death by our king. It is a shame that both of our brothers are dead though just to be king. I hope you do not get caught by the authorities, or anyone who is loyal to the king. I say that because you are doing a noble thing and it deserves to be noticed but you should not be punished for it. If you are caught I will come forward and admit to being apart of this because you should not have done this on your own. Together we will honor our brother, even if you are mad at me I will still stand strong next to you when you are brought before the king, if you are caught that is.

I am ashamed that I told you I would not go with you for fear of getting caught. Polyneices was, and still is, our brother, and no matter what he did he should still be given that proper burial that he deserved. Antigone you are a much better sister than I. I wish you luck on your journey to do the right thing for Polyneices.

Your dearest sister,

Ismene

Thoughts on Technology

I know how to get around on a computer with the internet, uploading photos, and downloading music. I do not do a whole lot on the computer. When something goes wrong with my computer I have to have my dad fix it or take it to a computer expert. I do not know a whole lot about technology. If someone shows me how to do something on the computer then I can do it but other words I have no idea how to fix problems that arise on my computer. I like playing games on the computer and surfing the internet. I also like working with my pictures on the computer and uploading music on itunes.
